National Health Care Day of Service
Updated Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - 1:43 PM by Thomas Fortenberry
National Health Care Day of Service: June 27th, 2009 First Lady Michelle Obama urges every citizen to join her in this event. The United We Serve initiative and Organizing for America are sponsoring the National Health Care Day of Service. Community service is a critical piece of our health care campaign. Volunteers who participate in the National Health Care Day of Service will be stronger advocates for health care reform. Volunteer projects directly expose participants to the reality of our country’s health care system and the millions of people who it is currently failing. National Health Care Day of Service volunteers will also build important relationships in their communities with health care professionals. Finally, these health care service projects give volunteers a chance to make an impact in their own communities and improve the lives of their neighbors in the short term while we simultaneously fight for long term, systemic health care reform. You don’t need to be an expert to help out. If you have a few hours to spare, you can help people near you get the care they need, and raise awareness about the urgent reform our nation requires. First Lady Michelle Obama says, "There's an old Thomas Edison quote I've always liked: 'Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.' " Let's get to work. Don't miss this opportunity to help your community and your nation.

Can We Talk?
Updated Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 12:09 PM by Thomas Fortenberry
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, a division of the City Manager’s Office, in collaboration with the Community Building Initiative (CBI), and Mecklenburg Ministries, invite you to attend a community dialogue to discuss meeting basic human needs in difficult economic times in our community (Charlotte-Mecklenburg). Please join us and our panelists – Ruben Campillo with the Latin American Coalition, Harvey Gantt with Gantt-Huberman, Carol Hardison with Crisis Assistance Ministry, John McGillicuddy with Mecklenburg County, and Rick Thames with the Charlotte Observer – as we talk about what we might do collectively and individually to meet the needs of those in our community who are impacted by our economic crisis. Please see the attachment and the information below for more details on this event. If you plan to attend, you may RSVP with Renee Thompson: To RSVP: E-Mail rthompson@ci.charlotte.nc.us or Call 704.336.2424 Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on June 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m at Little Rock AME Zion Church, 401 North McDowell Street. Willie Ratchford, Executive Director Community Relations Committee 704.336.2195 CAN WE TALK ABOUT MEETING BASIC HUMAN NEEDS IN DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIMES? Tuesday, June 30, 2009 7:00 PM Little Rock AME Zion Church 401 North McDowell Street Panelists Ruben Campillo Harvey Gantt Carol Hardison John McGillicuddy Rick Thames Latin American Coalition Gantt-Huberman Crisis Assistance Ministry Mecklenburg County Charlotte Observer Moderators Bob Morgan Willie Ratchford Charlotte Chamber Community Relations Like many communities across our country, Charlotte-Mecklenburg is feeling firsthand the impact of the nationwide economic downturn. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is eliminating teacher positions; Mecklenburg County and local agencies are cutting services; long term employees are being laid off in both the public and private sector; banks - the backbone of our economic sustainability - are struggling; people are losing their homes. Needs are increasing, and there seems to be no end in sight. On July 1st a new fiscal year begins for both government and many community organizations and agencies that provide services to those traditionally in need and potentially to a whole new group of individuals who will require assistance. Where do we find hope in such difficult times? How do we work together to address these issues and raise awareness about the impact of the economic crisis on people and organizations in our community? How do we insure that current or new service delivery models will address the needs of the community? Solutions might be contained in our responses to these questions: How do we organize ourselves to be proactive & responsive? Who do we look to? What are we prepared to do? What can I do? Beginning in 2008 our three organizations have invited the citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to engage people – both within their comfort zone and across difference – in conversation about “what’s in the ground” in our community that creates mistrust; and to come together to raise awareness and build understanding when divisive or difficult situations arise. Do you share our concern at this time? If so, we invite you to join us for a deliberative community dialogue: “Can We Talk About Meeting Basic Human Needs in Difficult Economic Times?” To RSVP: E-Mail rthompson@ci.charlotte.nc.us or Call 704.336.2424 If you are interested in receiving additional information about this dialogue, please contact Dianne English, Maria Hanlin or Willie Ratchford. Casted, Welded, Hammered & Forged: The Queen City Metalsmiths Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 28 FREE! Green Rice Designs & Studio 451 East 36th Street Charlotte, NC 28205 From the Stone Age through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, metalwork has flourished in art, industry and trade. By the 1700’s the village blacksmith ensured the economic survival of early America, making the implements and equipment used in farming, business, and even in the common household. After industrialization, when ironwork could be provided by factories, blacksmiths reinvented themselves, putting their age-old hand forging talents to more creative endeavors. The studio craft movement began in the middle of the past century, allowing the floodgates of creativity to be thrown wide open and unbridled abandon to flow freely. Standing on the shoulders of the metal giants who have preceded them, we welcome J. Aaron Alderman, Steven Sinnett, Rich Nossel and Marilyn Overton as they celebrate their ageless legacy of metalsmithing.

Masterworks from the New Orleans Museum of Art
Updated Friday, May 1, 2009 - 2:47 PM by Thomas Fortenberry
Through Monday, June 29 Presented by Mint Museum of Art $10-$15 Masterworks from the New Orleans Museum of Art provides an opportunity to see an exceptional selection of rare paintings and sculptures from a top museum! The exhibition represents the prized names in European and American art history – ranging from the 16th through the 20th century – including: Degas, Gauguin, Giacometti, Giordano, Kandinsky, Lipchitz, Lorrain, Matisse, Monet, Nattier, O'Keeffe, Picasso, Pissarro, Renoir, Rodin, Sargent, Vigée-Lebrun, and Vlaminck, among many others. In 1911, Isaac Delgado, a New Orleans resident, founded a museum of art named in his honor. It later became the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Since then, the museum has received numerous donations of great works of art or funds restricted to the purchase of artistic masterpieces. Today, their renowned collections’ strengths exist in European (especially French), American art, European Glass, Ancient American Art, African Art and Asian Art. Never before have all the "stars" of the New Orleans Museum of Art's painting and sculpture collection been allowed to tour for a limited engagement. Although the museum’s collection of 40,000 artworks was largely unharmed by the hurricane, the building and adjacent sculpture garden sustained more than $6 million in damage. The fees that NOMA generates from this traveling exhibition will benefit its Katrina Recovery Fund. For more information, see the Mint Wiki for authoritative online resource links, artist audio and video files, and catalog links to print resources. The Mint Museum Library creates and maintains the Mint Wiki. Learn in-depth information about the history behind some of the masterworks in this phenomenal exhibition. Led by Winthrop University Art History Professors.

Library Garden Gets New Gazebo, Brick Pathways
Updated Saturday, February 21, 2009 - 4:09 PM by Thomas Fortenberry
Library Garden Gets New Gazebo, Brick Pathways Work is nearing completion on a new gazebo and picnic table in the Steele Creek Library garden, and brick pathways have been installed to replace the original cypress mulch pathways. Susan McDonald, Manager of the Steele Creek Library, originally asked the Steele Creek Library Association for a picnic table to reward library staff for high achievement in the library's Customer Service Program last summer. The Library Association decided to expand the project to provide permanent, stable pathways and a sturdy gazebo to cover the table. Susan says that library staff plan to use the gazebo for children's programs in the spring and summer. She expects to have a concert or other community event to commemorate the library's 5th anniversary this August. Once the gazebo is complete, the final bricks have been placed around the gazebo supports, and construction materials are removed, the garden will be open for patrons to visit.

Brain Injury Support Group
Updated Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 5:48 PM by Monica Zeleznik
"Hello, I am a resident of Yorkshire and am also my wife's spouse and caregiver. She is a stroke survivor for almost 3 years now and is a tetrapalegic. She needs a lot of care which means this is a full time job for me. I know others in our community are struggling as well but with no help from a local support group in the Southwest region of Charlotte. Instead we must travel uptown for the group at CMC or Prespby. Those folks are excited about getting our area covered. I am seeking stroke and other brain injury and spinal cord injury survivors and their caregivers and family members to develop this group within the next few months. Please contact me if you can help in any way. Thanks Sincerely, Jake and Jane Osborne jakeandjane543701@gmail.com"
